This is a fascinating episode that takes up figures that the podcast has covered before—the Koch brothers, Austrian economists like Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, and others—but from a different angle: the entrepreneurial work ethic.

Historian Erik Baker’s superb book on the topic, Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America, offers a genuinely absorbing tour of this most American of ideologies, one that has emerged again and again, in various guises and in different circumstances, to reconcile workers to the contradictions of the U.S. economy, especially the shortage of jobs that has come with its many “innovations” and changes.

What are the historical and even spiritual sources of the entrepreneurial work ethic, and what ideological needs does it serve for bosses and managers? Why is it so seductive to Americans? How does it relate to deeply American impulses relating to responsibility, guilt, and shame? In what ways did the entrepreneurial work ethic serve U.S. aims during the Cold War? And how has it endured in our age of Silicon Valley tech overlords and the re-election of Donald Trump, entrepreneur?

We take up these questions and many more in this rich conversation.

An atheist, a radical for capitalism, a caricature of a greedy libertarian, a best-selling novelist, a difficult partner and passionate lover, and the self-proclaimed greatest philosopher since Aristotle: Ayn Rand was many things, and we talk about almost all of them in this epic episode.

To do so, we called upon historian Jennifer Burns, whose intellectual biography, Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right, is enormously helpful in trying to understand an idiosyncratic writer who, both then and now, fits ambiguously into the “fusionist” postwar conservative movement. Rand remains a controversial figure whose ideas permeate our culture and continue to inspire some of the most consequential (and least appealing) political figures in the United States.

To understand Rand and her influence, we examine her family’s experiences during and after the Russian Revolution; her journey to the United States and early success in Hollywood; the arduous path she trod to become a writer; Rand’s involvement in anti-New Deal politics in the 1930s and ’40s; her ideas, philosophy, and scandalous personal life; and much more.

Matt and Sam talk to Damon Linker about the George W. Bush administration and the conservative religious publication First Things, his own Straussian-tinged skeptical politics, and how today’s Right became so deranged.

Damon Linker is an idiosyncratic figure among political writers—trained by Straussians as a political philosopher, he’s a former editor of First Things, the flagship publication for intellectual religious conservatives, who broke with that publication over the Iraq War (among other things) and is now a self-described centrist. He’s also a longtime friend of the podcast, who recently started his own attempt to grapple with what’s happening in the GOP and among conservatives, a Substack newsletter he titled Eyes on the Right.

In this conversation, Matt and Sam talk with Linker about what his own trajectory can teach us about the Right: his experiences working at First Things while the Bush administration was gearing up to invade Iraq; why thinks Sarah Palin marked a turning point on the Right; and his case for understanding Donald Trump as a political, rather than legal, problem.

Over the past several decades, the shift of public goods and services into the control of corporations has taken a toll on their quality, increased inequality, undermined labor and civil rights, and made government less accountable. How can we restore our ownership of the commons?

Sarah Jaffe and Michelle Chen ▪ February 11, 2022

Over the past several decades, we have witnessed an extraordinary transfer of wealth and power from public ownership into private hands. The shift of public goods—such as public lands, transportation and utility infrastructure, healthcare services, prisons, and schools—into the control of corporations has paralleled a conservative turn in American politics, in which “free markets” are championed as the most efficient and effective means of managing social services and distributing public resources.

But privatization has taken a toll on both the quality of the goods and services on which the public relies, and on democracy as a whole. We talk to Donald Cohen, co-author of The Privatization of Everything and executive director of In the Public Interest, about how the privatization of public services and institutions has undermined civil rights, deepened inequality, and made government less accountable—and how the public can restore its ownership of the commons.

In other news, we look at Starbucks workers organizing across the country (with Owen Burnham), rideshare and delivery workers organizing in New York, a Brazilian labor caravan mobilizing to protect the Amazon (with Claudia Horn), and congressional staff talking union. With recommended reading on the cost of unsustainable containers and surveillance capitalism of the pandemic era.

Debt Relief

Under the weight of COVID-19, every lie we’ve been told about how the economy works is busting open, and our institutions are revealing themselves to be incapable of offering a path to recovery. Worse yet, many governments are using the crisis as a pretext for a punishing return to austerity.

Why? The answer can be summed up in one word: debt, an issue that Astra Taylor has spent the last several years organizing around as co-founder of the Debt Collective. Also a prolific writer and documentarian, Astra is the author most recently of Democracy May Not Exist, but We’ll Miss It When It’s Gone and director of the companion film What Is Democracy? She has recently written about both the food system and debt crises as they intersect with the pandemic (and climate change, too).

On this week’s show, Kate and Daniel talk to Astra about what the coronavirus pandemic has to do with eating meat, whether we really need a technocratic savior, why debt relief is inherently tied to democracy, and more. Kate and Daniel also take a look at the toxic record of Larry Summers, and why Democrats shouldn’t let him anywhere near the party platform.

First aired on Dissent’s podcast Hot & Bothered.

RADICAL PRAGMATISM

A Green New Deal needs to translate lofty ideas into specific interventions. How quickly can we decarbonize our energy grid, how do we overcome the institutional obstacles of the American political system, and how do we put frontline communities in the lead?

Designing The Green New Deal

To win a Green New Deal, we need to deepen and expand mass movements and coalitions. Last fall at the University of Pennsylvania, we organized a massive conference on Designing a Green New Deal, with contributions by academics, journalists, organizers, and designers. In this four-part mini-series, we bring you audio of the discussions.

To achieve rapid and equitable decarbonization will require immense practical wisdom, and a clear-eyed recognition of the obstacles in our path. We must also learn from the environmental justice movement, whose struggles invented the concepts behind the Green New Deal decades ago. This episode features UC Santa Barbara political scientist Leah Stokes, Vox writer David Roberts, WE-ACT Director of Legislative Affairs Kerene Tayloe, Esq, and Roosevelt Institute’s Director of Climate Policy Rhiana Gunn-Wright.

First aired on Dissent‘s podcast Hot & Bothered.
